Edward seems to have changed the spelling of his last name to Mollihan or Molihan after his mother left West Virginia with his brothers and sisters and moved first to Virginia and then to Ohio.

Edward served on the Union side of the Civil War in Company A, 3rd West Virginia Cavalry as a private along with his brother Josiah. Edwarden listed on 10 December 1861 at Hamden, OH  for three years. He reported to
Camp Carlisle, VA and on 24 December 1861 deserted. Edward and Josiah were arrested by the Sheriff of Vinton County, OH on 26 June 1862 in Vinton County and sent to Atheneum Military Prison in Wheeling, VA. He was listed as being 32 year of age, height 5 feet 10 3/4 inches, complexion dark, eyes blue, hair dark, occupation farmer. Edward was sent to Washington City (DC) on 22 July 1862 with his brother Josiah. He "was tried 2 October 1862 before a General Court Martial and found guilty of desertion from on or about 24 December 1861 and sentenced to forfeit all pay and allowances due him for the term of seven months. Findings and sentence approved, (although the punishment to be inflicted is hardly severe enough for an offense of such enormity) by Major General Sigel, and promulgated in General Order #30, Headquarters, 11th Corps, Army of the Potomac on 10 October 1862."

At this time, Companies A and B of the 3rd
West Virginia Cavalry (commanded by Captain Seymour B. Conger) were attached to the Headquarters of the GRAND RESERVE DIVISION commanded by Major-General Franz Sigel. This Division was comprised of the Eleventh and Twelfth Army Corps of the Army of the Potomac.

Edward received a gun shot wound to his left hand and injured his right eye on 22 October 1862 in a skirmish at Catlett Station, VA.

"HDQRS. ELEVENTH CORPS, ARMY OF THE
POTOMAC,
Fairfax Court-House,
October 25, 1862.
. . . A reconnaissance was sent out day before yesterday, under Captain Conger, Third Virginia Cavalry, by way of Davis' Ford, to Dumfries, Stafford Springs, and Warrenton Junction, with orders to return, by way of Catlett's Station and Bristoe Station, to Manassas Junction, where a detachment of the First Vermont Cavalry, under Captain Flint, was stationed, for Captain Conger's support. . . . At 4 p.m., Captain Conger, coming from Catlett's Station toward Bristoe Station, with about 40 men, was attacked about 2 miles south of Bristoe's Station by a force of 125 rebel cavalry, which he routed, his force returning by way of Manassas Junction to this place. This morning I am sorry to report that I lost the service of Captain Conger, his horse, during the fight, becoming disabled, and his brother (First Lieutenant Conger, of the Third Virginia Cavalry) and 1 man of the company only being missing [Edward?]. Twelve of the enemy's saddles, at least, have been emptied. We captured 2 prisoners and 3 horses. It seems that the enemy advanced from Warrenton Junction, with a strong force, to reconnoiter our advanced position, sending 150 men to
Manassas Junction, and 125 men to Bristoe Station, the whole force evidently returning to Warrenton Junction. I have further learned from refugees and other reliable sources that the enemy has a force of 2,000 cavalry, consisting of the Second North Carolina, Seventh and Twelfth Virginia, a small detachment of infantry, with some artillery, at Warrenton. The strength of the infantry force is given variously from one company to two regiments. . . .
F. SIGEL,
Major-General.
Major-General BANKS."

"FAIRFAX COURT-HOUSE,
October 27, 1862.
Captain Dahlgren, of my staff, returned from an expedition to Catlett's Station. He found the pickets of the enemy on the other side of Cedar Run, small patrols only having been lately to
Greenwich and Bristoe.
Captain Conger, of the Third Virginia Cavalry, was seriously wounded in the engagement last Friday, and lies in a farm-house near Bristoe Station. Lieutenant Conger and 2 privates were taken prisoners and sent to Culpeper. Captain Conger fought with his small force (of about 30 men) a very strong force of the enemy (about 200). The enemy had 1 captain killed and 2 captains wounded, besides having 7 or 8 privates killed and quite a number wounded.
F. SIGEL.
Generals BANKS and HEINTZELMAN"

Edward was captured and taken as a prisoner to
Richmond, VA Libby Prison where he received some treatment for his injuries. Edward was paroled and sent to Wheeling, VA (WV) around 26 November 1862. He was then sent back to his unit where he continued to serve.

Companies A and B of the 3rd
West Virginia Cavalry (commanded by Captain Seymour B. Conger) were attached to Second Brigade (commanded by Col. Thomas C. Devin), First Division (commanded by Brig. Gen. John Buford), Cavalry Corps (commanded by Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton) at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863.

Edward continued to serve until he was discharged on 25 January1865. His cousin, Arnold, also served in the 3rd but in Company M.

The following quote is from page 5 of the Charleston Mail newspaper dated 14 April 1915:

"MOLLOHAN IS GUILTY - Director of Bluefield Bank Convicted of False Pretense -
"Edward Mollohan, of Washington, formerly a director in the defunct Fidelity Banking & Trust Co., of Bluefield, was convicted of false pretenses, after the jury had been out for about three hours. This was his second trial, the jury disagreeing on the former trial.
"The indictment against Mollohan charged that he borrowed funds from the Fidelity Bank at Bluefield, in which the state of West Virginia had $80,000 on deposit when it failed, and then, when the funds run low, in order to replenish them, Mollohan sold to Henry W. Woodward of Washington a certificate for $7,000 containing the statement that the same had been deposited in the bank.
"When the bank failed and the certificate was presented for payment it was rejected and the statement was made that there never had been such a deposit in the bank."

According to B. M. Mollohan of Hacker Valley, WV in her book, "Josiah Brown is very elusive in the county records of Central West Virginia. His name appears on the 1810 census record of Virginia as living in Ohio County (Ohio County covered a large area in the Northwest corner of West Virginia in 1810). He is a difficult individual to trace because he is often referred to as Joseph Brown and, as there was indeed a Joseph Brown living in the area, one is never sure if the person being referred to is, in fact, Joseph or Josiah. In the History of Braxton County, Josiah is listed correctly as the father of one of his daughters, Hannah, but is listed incorrectly in another, Rachel, as Joseph."

However, my research has convinced me that Joseph is the correct name. The 1810 Federal Census for Ohio County lists a Josiah Brown with the following enumeration; 1 white male of ten and under fifteen, 1 white male of forty-five and over, 1 white female under ten years of age, 2 white females of sixteen and under twenty-five, 1 white female of forty-five and over. The individuals and ages indicated do not correspond to our subject, Joseph Brown.

On the other hand, the 1810 Federal Census for
Kanawha County lists a Joseph Brown with the enumeration denoted below. This enumeration does correspond to our subject Joseph Brown if one assumes that another married couple, of the same age group, were living with them (a common occurrence at this time). Additionally, the 1810 Federal Census for Kanawha County lists another Joseph Brown, on page 124, with the following enumeration; 1 white male of ten and under fifteen, 1 white male of forty-five and over, 3 white female under ten years of age, 1 white female of ten and under fifteen, 2 white females of sixteen and under twenty-five, 1 white female of forty-five and over. This Joseph Brown is probably our subject Joseph Brown's father. Which would add confirmation to my conclusion.

Joseph is supposed to have settled first near
Hacker Valley. He then moved to the Left Fork of the Holly River or at least bought property there. Joseph sold this property to his brother-in-law, James, and moved on the mountain near Replete. That area is now called Brown's Mountain in his honor.

Joseph and Elizabeth are probably buried in un-marked graves in the
Brown Cemetery on Brown's Mountain. The Brown Cemetery is rather large for the area where it is located, containing about forty graves, most of them un-marked.
